Ethics of “the claw”

The above link is to an NPR segment of letters in response to a story about Roy Kaylor, “a man who has mastered ‘the claw’ — the arcade game where a mechanical claw picks up stuffed animals and other toys.” Elizabeth Pownall of Eugene, Oregon wrote in to say that “he is basically stealing these toys … by airing this story, you have just taught a lot of people how to rip off the vending machine.” Huh? I wonder what she thinks about insurance companies. If anything, the story will motivate others to try to master the machine, and in the process create revenue for the company. If too many people master it, the company can adapt. Maybe we simply disagree because she considers the machine in question is a vending machine.
